911 dispatcher fields emergency call about her choking son

TORONTO – A 911 dispatcher in Marysville, California faced her worst nightmare after receiving an emergency call from her own home.

According to CBS Sacramento, Britney Melchor was training a new employee at the emergency dispatch centre when a call came in from her husband Robert Melchor.

He was forced to call 911 after his son began to turn blue after choking on a metal washer that came loose from a piece of furniture.

“I heard him say an address and I perked up and then I heard him say it again and I recognized that as my own home address,” Britney told the California news station.

In the 911 audio, Britney is heard relaying the call to the first responders, informing them that her “child was choking.”

“My first reaction was getting help to him right away,” Britney said. “Just like any other 911 phone call I’ve ever had, my first instinct is to do my job and help save that life.”

Robert said his child stopped breathing completely and became limp.

“At that point I made the decision to take my middle finger and shove the object past his airway,” Robert said.

The father was able to clear his son’s airway and emergency crews took the 1-year-old to hospital for further examination.

According to CBS, Britney was honoured by the local police department and the city for her performance during the family emergency.
