Don’t miss our one on one interview with Harry Belafonte who visited Montreal this week to accept the first ever humanitarian award at the Montreal International Black Film Festival. The inspiring interview touches on Belafonte’s incredible life as an activist. He spoke to us about why he felt compelled to get involved in the U.S. civil rights movement at great personal risk, and why he has continued that fight for human rights into his 85th year. He also offers some words of wisdom and hope for the young leaders of protests movements in this generation.

Out of great pain a Montreal family is fighting cancer with a gritty series of events under the banner F*&K Cancer. We tell the story of how their movement took shape, and meet the young Montrealer who is now expanding the fundraising campaign to cities across North America. Meet some young Quebec soccer players who went to Warsaw Poland earlier this month to play in the Danone Nations Cup. They met 40 teams from around the world, and ended the tournament in 12th place with 4 wins, 2 losses, and a pair of draws. More importantly these 10-12 year-olds came away with experiences they’ll remember for a lifetime and they tell us all about it.

Gun Control advocates were celebrating and reflecting this week. As Montreal marked the 6th anniversary since the Dawson College shooting, a Quebec court judge took their side against the federal government. The judge ruled Ottawa’s plan to destroy all data from the long gun registry is unconstitutional. We sit down with Polytechnique shooting victim, gun control advocate and spokesperson for poly se souvient Heidi Rathjen, and Dawson College shooting victim Meaghan Hennegan, to talk about the fight for gun control, and their message to Stephen Harper.

Global Montreal is proud to be the official sponsor of Montreal’s International Black Film Festival. For its 8th edition the Festival is featuring more than a hundred movies from countries all over the world. Special guests this year include the great singer, actor and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte, who will pick up the festival’s humanitarian award on opening night in Montreal; and motivational speaker and author Steadman Graham. We sit down with festival president Fabienne Colas to get the scoop on this year’s edition.  The festival kicks off September 19th.

Sunday marks the 32nd annual Terry Fox run in communities across Canada. The event commemorates the courage and determination of the young man who embarked on the marathon of hope 32 years ago. More than 600 million dollars has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name. We sit down with Peter Sheremeta, Provincial Director of The Terry Fox Foundation, and Eddy Nolan a Montrealer who has taken part in every run for the past 32 years, and who is now battling cancer himself.

The owners of Place Ville Marie have released a new book commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the popular Montreal landmark. We have two copies of the book to give away. Along with the history and architectural legacy of the building, Marie Caron, Director of Marketing for Ivanhoe Cambridge, talks about the new book and events leading up to the exact day in 1962 when PVM was officially inaugurated, September 13th.

Former Montreal Canadiens tough-guy, Chris Nilan, talks about the first annual Walk’N Roll event, September 12th. He’ll be in a wheelchair, rolling through Old Montreal, to raise awareness for physically disabled people and to raise funds for the Action Centre. Chris is joined in-studio by Joanne Heward, Executive Director of the Action Centre.

Jason Rockman of theMontreal Comic Con is in-studio to talk about this year’s event. It’s been moved to a larger venue, le Palais des congres, and has been expanded to three days, September 14th 15th and 16th.  Jason talks about this year’s guest line-up and has a three-day pass to give away, as well as a T-shirt and tote bag.

The president of the Longueuil International Percussion Festival, Gilbert Lucu, talks about this year’s 11th edition. He talks about some of the highlights and the theme of this year’s six-day event. Gilbert is accompanied by percussionist and festival artist, Joannie Labelle, who organizes a percussion performance featuring some Global Montreal staff members! The festival runs from July 10th to the 15th.

Nadine Marchand, director of “Montreal Completement Cirque“, talks about the circus festival’s third edition. It runs from July 5th to the 15th and features 140 performers and artists from fifteen companies, spanning two continents. There is circus theatre, circus dance and a world premiere by a Montreal company!

Concordia University’s Director of Special Projects and Cultural Affairs, Clarence Epstein, has written a book, titled “Montreal City of Spires“. It examines the city’s religious architecture through history. He talks about the book and a few of Montreal’s remarkable churches. Walking tours are planned for September. We have a signed copy of the book to give away.

The Public Relations Manager for Beyond the Rack, Lori Krebs, is on the show to talk about the “Real Woman Model Search“, which launches Tuesday. Beyond the Rack has teamed with Redbook magazine for the contest. Lori talks about the idea behind the contest and the prize package, including a professional photo shoot and makeover. Lori has a $100 Beyond the Rack gift card to give away.

Steve Hill has released his seventh album, titled “Solo Recordings Volume One.” The terrific blues album contains a dozen songs recorded by Steve, alone, with a guitar, a bass drum on one foot and a hi-hat on the other. We have a signed copy of the new album to give away. Live in-studio, Steve performs “Out of Phase”, one of the highly memorable tracks off the album. He also talks about his upcoming shows around the province and his show July 1st at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Stephane Gauvin is a researcher for the provincial government research centre, CEFRIO, and a professor in the faculty of administrative sciences at Universite Laval. CEFRIO recently released the results of a study on internet usage in Quebec. Stephane discusses some of those results including the fact 49% of Quebecers over 65 years of age used the internet.

Daniel Germain just received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is the founder and president of the Club des petits dejeuneurs du Quebec and has just created with another remarkable initiative called, The Children’s Hour, where Quebecers are asked to donate an hour of pay to encourage the successes of schools and their students.

Art Rotondo.com is an artistic partner of the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix. The Montreal business highlights the talents of two brothers, Mauro and Arturo Rotondo. They create the banners over the Canadian Grand Prix garages and paint the helmets of race car drivers. Arturo creates dazzling paintings of race car legends and company booths are set-up on-site during the Grand Prix event. Mauro talks about how the company made the connection with the local F1 event. We also give away a pair of Art Rotondo karting gloves!

Caroline Neron made her name as an actress and singer and then, in 2004, she launched “Bijoux Caroline Neron.” Today, Caroline has fourteen retail jewelry outlets, annual sales of $10 million and plans to expand into Ontario. Caroline talks about the jump into business and her enjoyment of fashion and fashion design. She also gives away a piece of her jewelry to a lucky viewer. 

Annabel Soutar is the writer of an agro-documentary theatre piece titled “Seeds.” It will be presented in Montreal June 7th, 8th and 9th as part of Festival TransAmeriques.  The play documents the legal battle between a Saskatchewan farmer and multinational, Monsanto.

Choreographer and dancer Dana Gingras founded her company in 2006. Her piece, “Heart As Arena”, is being presented in Montreal May 29th ,30th and 31st as part of the Festival TransAmeriques.  Dana talks about her inspiration for the show and her approach to creating choreography. We have a pair of tickets to give away to the premiere of “Heart As Arena”

An interview with Montreal hairdresser and entrepreneur, Isabelle Lachance, winner of the 2012 Haute Coiffure Francaise Audience Prize and Color Prize. Isabelle talks about participating in the international competition in Paris, her businesses and her vision of hairdressing.

An interview with Patrick Park and Olivia Kostin-Cohen of St-George’s High School. The two Grade 11 students are members of the “G Major Glee Club”, which recently returned from Show Choir Canada nationals in Toronto. The club finished in fifth place. Patrick was named Top Male Vocalist at the event. Patrick and Olivia talk about the experience and their glee club performs one of the songs they featured at last month’s competition. The “G Major Glee Club” also performs next week at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall. We have two CD’s to give away from the Global hit show, “Glee”.

The Canadian Association for Music Therapy holds its annual conference in Montreal next weekend. Co-chairs Dr Sandi Curtis and Dr Guylaine Vaillancourt are in-studio to talk about the event and to discuss the notion of music as medicine. Dr Curtis is also chair of an international conference on gender in creative arts therapies that’s also happening next weekend in Montreal.

May is Chair Aware month. The event highlights the work of the Action Centre in Lasalle; it provides structured activities promoting the social inclusion and active participation of adults with severe and permanent motor and/or cognitive limitations. Teri-Lee Walters is Action Centre Chair Aware spokesperson. She talks about the action centre and the wheelchair basketball tournament May 12th.

The McGill Redmen are CIS national men’s hockey champions. After getting to the championship game last year and losing, the Redmen made it back this year and claimed the prize for their own. Team captain Evan Vossen scored the championship-winning goal in overtime. He’s in-studio to talk about the huge goal and what the win means to the team, the hockey program and the McGill community. 

April 21, 2012
Singers from all over Canada and the United States are coming to Montreal next weekend to participate in a huge competition and convention. It is the Harmony Inc Area Two Convention and Competition. It’s being hosted by the women’s a cappella barbershop chorus, “Montreal City Voices”. The group’s director, Lindsay Chartier, talks about the competition – and viewers are treated to a performance by “Coming Attraction,” one of the quartets performing at the Sheraton Laval next weekend.

Montreal’s first dance-themed exposition happens next weekend April 28 and 29 at Place Bonaventure. It’s called “DancEmotion Expo 2012.” Marianne Birch, Managing Director, talks about the event. At next weekend’s event, there will be prestigious schools, casting directors, recruiters, artistic directors, conferences, demonstrations and all things dance! On Sunday night’s “Focus Montreal”, we have dance demonstrations by Melissa Villarreal Morales and Natsumi Sophia Bellali of Ballet Montreal Performing Arts, as well as Khalyd Birch and Miranda Chan of Studio de Danse Montreal Paris.

April 14, 2012:
An interview with winemaker and Concordia University graduate, Thomas Bachelder and his business partner, Mary Delaney. His three Bachelder Chardonnays were launched last month at the SAQ. His wines are garnering rave reviews and he talks about an upcoming Montreal tasting, April 30th.

Montreal’s first “a cappella” singing festival happens April 22nd. Co-presidents Glynn Rankin and Michael Dyck talk about their inspiration for the festival and the challenges of organizing the event. They give away two pairs of tickets and two T-shirts.

We’re also treated to two performances by the all-female “a cappella” group, VoxA4

April 7, 2012:
It’s the “Hot Cities of the World Tour“, an event organized by McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management. Students and graduates visit economically “hot” areas of the world to meet with CEO’s, students, diplomats and alumnae. The fourth edition visited South Africa and recent graduate Daniel Novak was among the participants. Daniel talks about the tour and the philanthropic component of the trips.

Jazz songstress Susie Arioli has just released her seventh studio album, titled “All the Way”. Susie and her band stop-by to perform two songs from the new release. Susie and guitarist Jordan Officer talk about the making of the record. We have a copy of “All the Way” to give away. Susie will be performing at Theatre Maisonneuve November 22nd.

Historian, journalist and author Alan Hustak talks about the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster. His 1998 book, “Titanic: The Canadian Story“, has been updated for the approaching centennial. We have a copy to give away. Alan talks about some of the Canadians who were aboard the doomed ship. He’ll also be lecturing aboard the upcoming Titanic memorial cruise.

We meet a Quebecer who’s visited the most remote island on the face of the Earth. Jason Rodi left a time capsule at the peak of Bouvet Island. He talks about the motivation behind his “Expedition for the Future“.

Brendan O’Dowd, co-founder of “The Ride Shakedown“, is in-studio to talk about the 11th edition of the popular snowboarding event. It’s set for March 30th and 31st at Mont St-Sauveur.It will feature forty international athletes, including three-time Shakedown champion and X-Games gold medallist Sebastien Toutant and eighty amateurs, all competing for thousands of dollars in prize money. Brendan has some head gear to give away.

Renowned Quebec designer Jean-Claude Poitras talks about the retrospective of his career currently highlighting the National Home Show at Place Bonaventure. The show, which features 1500 experts in renovation, decoration and landscaping, continues until March 25th. We have two tickets to give away. 

Former Uzeb bassist, Alain Caron, is in-studio to talk about “Jazz en rafales“, the mini-jazz festival that happens the weekends of March 21-24 and March 29-31. Caron, who won a 2011 Felix Award for Best Album in the Jazz Creation category, performs March 30th at L’Astral.

McGill’s energetic and talented “Effusion A Cappella” singers perform in-studio, as a preview to their spring concert March 25th at Club Soda. We have two tickets to give away. Gabriel Bran Lopez is co-founder of “First Robotics Quebec“, a festival that pits university, college and high school teams together, as they compete to have their robots complete challenges. The exciting and highly competitive event happens at Stade Uniprix from March 15th to the 17th. One of the robots is in-studio!

The International Artistic Director for Oligo Professional, Stephane Bergeron, is in-studio with a model, to demonstrate a beauty trend. Stephane is one of the presenters at the Allied Beauty Association trade show this weekend at le Palais des Congres.

An interview with Judith Brisson, a math teacher from St-John’s High School in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, who is going to El Salvador as an international election observer. Judith talks about the risks inherent in her work and her experiences as an election observer in Mexico’s federal election in 2000.

Pharmacist Jean-Yves Dionne is a spokesman for the Expo Manger Santé, coming to le Palais des congres March 16-18 and then to Centre des congres in Quebec City, March 24-25.  He talks about current trends in healthy eating and what visitors to the show can expect to see and sample! Sixteen new chefs are about to face-off on “Top Chef Canada“. We meet the Montreal contestant, Sergio Mattoscio, owner of the Macaroni Bar in Montreal. Sergio prepares an original salad for us. The second season of “Top Chef Canada” premieres March 12th at 10pm on Food Network Canada.

Retired vice-principal Christopher Roblin believes having police officers conduct daily visits to every school in Quebec would help end student bullying and intimidation. He’s in the process of setting-up the “KidKop Foundation” and explains his motivation. He’s joined by Dawson College shooting victims, Meaghan Hennegan and Kathlene Dixon. In 2003, Olga Hrycak became the first woman in North America to become head coach of a men’s university basketball team. The two-time Quebec Coach of the Year is now in her ninth year as head coach of the Citadins d’UQAM. With International Women’s Day approaching, Olga talks about the challenges facing a female coach in a male-dominated environment.

Montreal rapper Annakin Slayd talks about his Gary Carter tribute song. Proceeds from the sale of the mp3 go directly to the Gary Carter Foundation. Annakin has a copy of his latest CD to give away, along with a tuque and baseball cap.

Author, consultant, playwright and professor emerita, Dr Dolores Sandoval, discusses Black History Month and her dream of establishing a museum of multiculturalism in Montreal. Dr Sandoval is founder of Quebec’s first black think-tank, the DaCosta-Angelique Institute.

The Port Symphonies return! They are pieces of music that use the foghorns of tugboats and ships in Montreal’s Old Port as instruments. Train horns and other urban instruments are also part of the music. Francine Labrosse, Cultural Activities Coordinator of Pointe-a-Callieres museum, is in charge of the event. She talks about this year’s composer and performances, scheduled for February 26th and March 4th.

Visual artist Aquil Virani believes all of us can draw! The McGill philosophy student been working on a project called “We Are All Artists”. Instead of hanging a painting on a wall in front of people, he painted in front of people and made them part of the creation process. His second solo show, “Copycat”, opened this week in the basement of McGill’s Leacock Building.

An interview with Dr Robert Bernard, Professor of Educational Technology at Concordia University , on the results of a study published in the “Review of Educational Research”.
The study looks at how computers enhance classroom learning.

Dating in 2012. Technology – tweeting, texting, on-line dating, social networks – it’s all meant drastic changes in the dating landscape. Reader’s Digest teamed-up with Leger Marketing to examine those changes.

The Running Room has organized next weekend’s 21.1 km Hypothermic Half-Marathon through Parc Jean Drapeau, with proceeds going to the Quebec foundation, Lighthouse.

Harry West is a student at FACE in Montreal. An 18 year old Dawson College student from St-Bruno, Michelle Vanderzon, is up for Chatelaine magazine’s “woman of the year” for her work on children’s rights, as well as her fundraising work in Rwanda and India.

Quebec bluesman Steve Hill is in-studio to talk about his new album “Whiplash Love” and to perform the second single from the album, entitled “I’ll Walk.”
Steve will be performing at l’Astral, Thursday December 1st.

An interview with Lynda Lubin of the “Just for Kids Foundation” about the second annual “TNT JFK Glee Club Competition”. The November 13th event raises funds for Just for Kids and allows the purchase of high priority equipment for the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Representatives from two of the competing Glee Clubs perform excerpts.

The founder and artistic director of the Montreal Bach Festival, Dr Alexandra Scheibler, talks about the fifth edition of the event and the relevance of the composer’s work today.
