Hugh MacDonald was first elected as a Member of the Alberta Legislature in the general election of 1997. He has served as MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar from that time until his fourth term, which began March 3, 2008. MacDonald is the critic for Finance and Enterprise, Treasury Board, and Employment and Immigration. In addition, MacDonald is currently serving as a member of several committees, including Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, Legislative Offices, Private Bills, and Public Safety and Services. He has also served as the Official Opposition critic for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Energy, the Heritage Savings Trust Fund, Human Resources and Employment and Government Services.

Born August 5, 1955, in Souris, Prince Edward Island, MacDonald spent 20 years working in Alberta’s petroleum industry as a boilermaker and small business owner prior to becoming an MLA.

MacDonald lives in the Strathearn area of Edmonton-Gold Bar with Jan and their three children.
