EDMONTON – A portion of Yellowhead Trail has been reopened, after the closure caused a major traffic tie-up in east Edmonton Wednesday afternoon.
Alberta Transportation closed Yellowhead Trail eastbound at the Anthony Henday Drive interchange, just east of 17 Street, just before the evening rush hour Wednesday.
Workers in the area worried that an excavation near the road could give way and damage the highway. The roadway was closed for about six hours while crews work to stabilize the road.
A detour was put in place for motorists, which involved heading onto Anthony Henday Drive south, exiting at the Baseline Road interchange, then turning north onto Anthony Henday to then take the eastbound ramp back onto the Yellowhead.
The closure caused traffic to back up all the way to Fort Road Wednesday afternoon, as seen in video captured by the Global 1 News Helicopter shortly after 4:30 p.m.
