RCMP say they will be closing Wreck Beach next Friday to prevent a massive gathering of people being planned on Facebook.

The Vancouver Full Moon Beach Party has 7,700 confirmed attendees with a further 7,400 people yet to respond. It’s being organized by Swedish DJ named DJ Bjorn, who is now based in Vancouver.

Sgt. Drew Grainger of the RCMP at UBC says police will close the beach on the night of the party.

He says the closure is for the safety of potential partygoers, as the area can be treacherous after dark. A woman reportedly fell down a steep embankment above the beach earlier this week.

Grainger also says the party violates city bylaws about being on beaches after hours.

Last month, RCMP announced they will be stepping up patrols on the popular nudist-friendly beach this summer. Police say they want to curb drug overdoses and sexual behavior in public.
