EDMONTON – Albertans are being urged to be wary of ticks that cause Lyme disease.
The province says five of the tiny bugs have been found on dogs and cats in the Calgary and Edmonton areas.
Lyme disease can cause people or animals to become seriously ill.

Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, says preventing bites is the best defence against Lyme disease.
People are being urged to wear insect repellent and cover up when walking in tall grass, woods or brush.
There have been no reported human cases of Lyme disease in Alberta this year and none since 2008.
Dr. Gerald Hauer, Alberta’s chief veterinarian, says it is important for pet owners to inspect their animals for ticks, especially after visiting grassy fields and wooded areas.
