‘Maleficent’ wins weekend box office with $70M debut

TORONTO — Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent debuted in the top spot this past weekend with $70 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The fantasy adventure, also starring Elle Fanning, has already made $170.6 million worldwide.

It gave Jolie her biggest ever opening weekend.

Maleficent easily topped the sci-fi action flick X-Men: Days of Future Past, which earned $32.6 million in its second weekend — a drop of 64 per cent in a week.

The Montreal-made X-Men sequel topped $500 million worldwide.

The weekend’s other new movie, A Million Ways to Die in the West, opened in third place with $17 million.

Godzilla continued to roar in cinemas, adding $12 million in its third weekend. The monster reboot has earned $374.6 million worldwide.

The Adam Sandler comedy Blended fell two spots to fifth with $8.4 million. In two weeks of release the movie has made a disappointing $31.7 million globally.

Rounding out the Top 10 this past weekend were Neighbors ($7.7 million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($3.8 million), Million Dollar Arm ($3.7 million), Chef ($2 million) and The Other Woman ($1.4 million).
