NORTH PRESTON, N.S. – An early morning blaze on Tuesday destroyed a family home in North Preston, despite the efforts of fire crews to save it.

Halifax Fire says it received a call about the fire around 1:40 a.m., and about 10 firetrucks responded to the scene on Amelia Court.

“[The] first arriving [truck] saw a fully engulfed structure from a distance and called additional resources,” said Steve Martin, the district captain for Halifax Fire.

Nobody was home at the time the fire broke out.

Martin said flames were shooting through the roof at the time, and there was not much fire fighters could do to save the home other than put out the fire.

“The house is probably a total loss,” he said, estimating the damage to be in excess of $250,000.

The home is located down a short gravel road, but had easy access to a fire hydrant.

The firefighters remained on the scene for a few hours to control hot spots and investigators will stay to determine the cause of the fire.
