EU experts inspect new Danish border controls, decline evaluation

COPENHAGEN – European Commission experts inspected Denmark’s new border control system Thursday but refused to say whether it complies with EU regulations.

The Danish government in May decided to establish permanent customs controls at all state borders to stem the flow of criminals and illegal immigrants entering the country.

The decision angered many of the EU’s 27 members, including Danish neighbours Germany and Sweden.

Last week Denmark deployed 50 new customs officers on its borders as the new controls started, and on Thursday EU experts visited two border crossings – with Sweden and Germany – to gauge whether the new system violates EU citizens’ right to move freely across Europe.

EU officials declined to comment the results of the inspections.

“We have confidence in the Danish government to apply with the EU law. Today’s visit was to see how those working at the borders were doing the controls,” EC spokeswoman Belinda Pyke said.
