Geography

The Northeast Scarborough riding, this electoral district is bordered by Brimley and Midland Avenue to the west, Steeles to the north, Highway 401 to the south, and Rogue Park to the east, except for the southeast part of the Rogue neighbourhood.

History

Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon was elected by nearly 18,000 votes in the 2007 election, but in 2011 that gap narrowed to less than 2,500 over NDP challenger Neethan Shan, who is back to challenge again this election. Prior to Balkissoon, the riding was held by Alvin Curling from 1985 to 2005.

By the numbers

The average household size of 3.5 is the second largest in the province. There’s also a large Tamil population – it was the first language of 13.19 per cent of people in the 2011 census, highest in the province. Eighty-nine per cent of people identified as a visible minority in the 2011 census, the most in Ontario.
