Before I wrote my hunter’s safety exam, my brother gave me a copy of Beyond Fair Chase, by Jim Posewitz.
It’s an easy read that many hunters will have familiarized themselves with before taking up the sport. As we continue our Farm in Focus series this week, it occurred to me that before hunting, I spent very little time out in nature. Of course, that’s not the same for everyone, particularly those who enjoy hiking, skiing, fishing, etc. without being on the lookout for prey, but I enjoyed hunting for the time it took me outdoors and the assurance it gave me about the safety of the meat I was consuming.
These were sentiments expressed by two of the archers we feature in this weekend’s story on archery: Danielle Bergen and Madison Hart. I think it’s fitting for an episode where we also talk about the loss of native prairie habitat and native prairie plants. Conservationists come from all walks of life: university biologists and extreme sports enthusiasts alike.
