Monique Taylor completed the NDP’s sweep of Hamilton last election, defeating Liberal MPP Sophia Aggelonitis by just under 6,000 votes, breaking their 12 year grip on the riding. The NDP’s Brian Charlton held the riding from 1977 to 1995. The NDP does best in areas north of the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, while the Liberals do better in the newer neighbourhoods to the south.
By the numbers
A stable riding, 65.9 per cent of people in the riding stayed at the same address between the 2006 and 2011 elections, the second most of any urban riding in Ontario. Otherwise, Hamilton Mountain is very average demographically, not appearing in the top or bottom 30 for median age, household size, language diversity, or income.
