Geography

With all of Grey Country and most of Bruce, this large rural riding extends from the Bruce Peninsula south to the Grey Highlands. The largest population centre in the riding is Owen Sound with just over 20,000 people.

History

Progressive Conservative candidate Bill Walker handily took this seat in 2011 by over 20%. He replaced retiring MPP Bill Murdoch, who had served in the region for the PCs since 1990. The provincial Green party had their best ever result here in 2007, with Shane Jolley finishing in second place to Murdoch with 33.1% of the vote.

By the numbers

The median age of 45.3 is the second-oldest in southern Ontario. It’s also a heavily English-speaking riding, with 92.4% of people listing it as their mother tongue in the 2011 census.
