Toronto students must pass breathalyzer test to attend prom

WATCH: Toronto High School to have Breathalyzers at prom

TORONTO – High school seniors at Northern Secondary School must pass one more test before attending their senior prom – but it’s one that has civil liberties advocates up in arms.

The school’s principal Roni Felsen, decided that students must take and pass a breathalyzer test administered by Toronto Police officers to gain admission to the celebration.

However, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association has taken issue with the oral exam, saying it violates the school’s own policies. In a letter to the school, the CCLA said:

“”We fully recognize that schools have an obligation to provide a safe and secure learning environment,” the statement read. “School officials also, however, have an obligation to abide by the limits set out in the Education Act and to respect Charter rights of their students, including the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure.”
