Taro Pharmaceuticals recalls 1 lot of docusate sodium capsules; contamination risk

TORONTO – A drug company is recalling capsules that are used to treat constipation because of possible contamination with bacteria that can cause serious infections.

Taro Pharmaceuticals Canada says the recall affects 100-milligram docusate sodium capsules with the lot number 31040225.

The bacterial organism that is of concern is cronobacter (enterobacter) sakazakii, which can be a rare cause of meningitis and bloodstream infections, particularly in premature infants.

Elderly people and those with weakened immune systems could also be vulnerable.

Health Canada says consumers should speak to their doctor if they or a family member used the over-the-counter docusate sodium capsules from Taro Pharmaceuticals.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions in Canada associated with the use of these capsules.
