TORONTO – As Rubik’s Cube fans mark its 40th anniversary, a Canadian teen set a world record over the weekend, solving the puzzle in under 13 seconds using one hand.
Antoine Cantin set the record for 3×3 One-Handed Average with a total time 12.56 seconds. The previous record was set in 2012 by Michał Pleskowicz with a time of 12.67.
The Ottawa-area native holds Canadian records for the fastest 3×3 Average with a time of 8.79, 3×3 One-Handed Signal with a time of 10.63.
According to the World Cube Association, Cantin is number one in North America for the sum of all single ranks.
The world’s best-selling puzzle was created by Erno Rubik as a teaching tool for his students.
“I was a teacher at that time, and I wanted to find good tools, teaching aids, to help my students understand space relations,” he told the Associated Press last week.
