Poor highway conditions lead to crashes on Alberta highways

CALGARY- A spring storm made for slick conditions on some Alberta highways on Friday, proving problematic for those leaving town for the long weekend.

A number of semis were reported to be in the ditch just north of Red Deer, along with dozens of crashes. That caused the southbound lanes of Highway 2 to grind to a halt.

Ponoka RCMP said the roadway came to a complete stop in the southbound lanes just south of Lacombe, while the northbound lanes were slow moving. They warn that the highway is very icy, and travel is not recommended.

At one point, traffic was diverted onto Hwy 2A, created long lineups. Highway 2 has since been reopened, but conditions continue to be poor and travellers should expect long delays.

AMA road reports show roads are partially covered with snow between Innisfail and Lacombe, which includes the Blackfalds and Red Deer areas.
