Family of man accused in Brentwood mass murder to make statement

CALGARY- The family of the young man accused in Calgary’s worst mass murder is set to release a statement.

On Tuesday, five young university students were stabbed to death during a party celebrating the end of the school year. 22-year-old Matthew de Grood now faces five counts of first-degree murder in connection with the attack.

De Grood is the son of Doug de Grood, a police officer who has been with the Calgary Police Service for over three decades.

Doug de Grood plans to make a statement at his lawyer’s office on Thursday afternoon.

Matthew de Grood is in custody, ahead of his next court appearance.
