WHITBY, Ont. – Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared Durham Regional Police officers in a shooting incident that left a man dead and a baby with a bullet wound.

The Special Investigations Unit says officers went to a home in Whitby on July 4 to investigate Andre Hogg, 22, on a criminal matter.

The man was in the basement with his 13-month-old child and the baby’s grandmother. As police were going down the stairs, they heard gunshots and left the home, along with the grandmother.

The baby’s mother went into the home and came out with the child, who had suffered a bullet wound.

Officers found Hogg’s body in the basement, along with a handgun, shell casings and a live round.

The SIU says the officers had not fired their guns and director Ian Scott says the only reasonable conclusion is that Hogg took his own life, with no police involvement in his death.
