UPDATE: Escapee surrenders after police stand-off in Saskatoon

A prisoner who escaped from a Saskatchewan hospital on the weekend surrendered to police at the end of a stand-off on Tuesday afternoon in Saskatoon.

Just after 11 a.m., police were informed a man had barricaded himself inside an apartment in the 2100-block of 7th Street East.

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) and crisis negotiators were called in to deal with the situation.

Joseph Yaremko, 32, was arrested around 4:40 p.m.

He is in custody on charges of being unlawfully in a dwelling as well as an outstanding warrant for being unlawfully at large.

Yaremko has a history of violence and escaped from the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford on Sunday evening.

Mounties said Yaremko was possibly picked up by an accomplice in a vehicle and headed for either Saskatoon or Prince Albert.
