The group responsible for reviewing pool operations at Grant MacEwan University has recommended that $5 million be allocated to keep the pool open and to upgrade the aquatics facility and fitness area.
The Review Task Team (RTT) included representatives from the MacEwan Students, Faculty and Staff Associations, the Office of the Provost, Facilities, Financial Services and one public representative.
The RTT was struck after significant backlash to the school’s decision to close the pool last year. Students, faculty and members of the public all complained that they had not been consulted before the decision was made.
The school claimed that a budget shortfall was the reason for the pool closure and that removing the pool would save approximately $500,000 in operating costs per year.
After a number of protests, the school announced it would put off a final decision on closing the pool until a review had been completed.
The recommendations of the RTT are now subject to approval by MacEwan’s Board of Governors.
