Satellite Debris

Despite the catchy name of Satellite Debris, which fans of sports director Squire Barnes will know well, his young racehorse is known around the Hastings Racecourse barn as ‘Randene’. "It’s because of the noon show," said Barnes, who explained that the name seen on the program is not the one the horse is known by off the track.

Global BC’s Randene Neil went down to meet her counterpart on Thursday morning, and prompty declared that she was in love.

It seems Randene the horse is going to have that effect on practically everyone she meets. She was eager to say hello to the Global BC cameras and wasn’t shy about showing off.

Barnes is leasing ‘Randene’ for the next year, and he has high hopes for the two-year-old filly. He wants her to be undefeated, and said she has shown some decent speed in the mornings. "I think this horse has a good opportunity," he said. "I think she has a chance."

The young horse is still growing, but Barnes said she is very friendly, which was evident by her first appearance on the morning show.

Satellite Debris (Randene) will run her first race on Friday, July 22, at Hastings Racecourse at about 3:50 p.m. After this race, Barnes will see how she does and if she wins, he’ll think about moving her up.

UPDATE: Satellite Debris came first place in her race. See video above.

Part of the proceeds from the horse will also go to a charity called New Stride, where every noncompetitive and injured Thoroughbred racehorse gets a chance to be adopted into a new and caring home.
