Video: Winnipeg’s new airport is nearly ready

It’s perhaps one of the most anticipated constructions in the city, the new airport terminal. The massive structure is now a few months away from welcoming travelers.

Baggage carousels are moving and the public announcement system is functioning.

At a size of four football fields it seems Winnipeg’s new airport terminal is finally coming together and it’s drastically different from the existing airport terminal. The biggest difference between the new and the old terminal is that there will no longer be line-ups at your airline’s ticket counter.

“As a passenger you can check in at any one of 32 common use kiosks and it allows us to process many more people here at the airport,” said Christine Alongi of Winnipeg Airports Authority.

On top of conveniences like charging stations for your electronic devices, more than 25 stores and restaurants will open, including PGA Tour shops, Indigo Spirit, a Liquor Mart and local favourites Toad Hall Toys and Stellas Café.

Despite several construction issues as leaking pipes, pushing the grand opening back, the Winnipeg Airports Authority is still confident the project will be within the $585 million budget.

“That budget has never gone over. Contingencies have always been built in and we’ve had a few deviations in terms of putting in body scanners and those sorts of things, so on budget, not over budget at all,” said Alongi.
