TORONTO – A Toronto police officer killed on duty was remembered as a hero today as a small park in the heart of the city was named in his honour.
Mayor Rob Ford, police Chief Bill Blair and other officials joined the family of Sgt. Ryan Russell in a ceremony to rename the parkette.
Russell’s parents and his widow Christine – with her young son Nolan at her side – together unveiled the new park sign.
Toronto council voted in February to honour Russell, an 11-year veteran of the city’s police force, by renaming the park.
The 35-year-old officer died after being struck by a snowplow in January, and a 44-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder in his death.
The park on Avenue Road near Dupont Street was formerly known as the Dupont Parkette.
