Mayor Don Iveson proclaims April 12 ‘Ryan Smyth Day’ in Edmonton

EDMONTON – As Edmonton Oilers veteran Ryan Smyth prepares to hang up his skates for good, Mayor Don Iveson has proclaimed April 12 ‘Ryan Smyth Day’ in the City of Champions.

“It gives me great pleasure to offer this proclamation on the occasion of Ryan Smyth’s retirement,” Iveson said as he began his proclamation, recorded for Oilers TV.

“Whereas the Edmonton Oilers hockey club is a celebrated and iconic part of our city’s history, identity and community; and whereas Edmonton Oiler Ryan Smyth is retiring after 20 season and 1,270 games in the National Hockey League; and whereas Ryan finishes his hockey career with 386 goals, 456 assists, and a number of Edmonton Oilers club records, including fastest hat trick … I, Mayor Don Iveson, do hereby proclaim April 12 Ryan Smyth Day in Edmonton.”

Iveson also touched on Smyth’s great worth ethic, passion for the game of hockey and many charitable contributions he’s made in the City of Edmonton.

He also pulled on an Edmonton Oilers jersey with the number 10 on it, which Iveson says represents Ward 10 — the ward he represented as city councillor.

Iveson’s proclamation comes one day after 38-year-old Smyth announced his retirement from the NHL.
