EDMONTON – Sections of the town of Peace River were placed under a voluntary evacuation order Tuesday night as water flooded areas of the community.

Peace River Mayor Tom Tarpey said 15 to 20 businesses in the downtown core were affected after a creek overflowed.

A section of Highway 744 was also closed.

“We’re going to watch the melt. We feel the blockage seemed to give way during the night, and we were able to re-establish the flow of Pat’s Creek culvert out to the Peace River itself. It seems to be flowing well,” explained Tarpey.
