Spring construction issues melting point for Saskatoon residents

Watch above: the spring melt has uncovered construction woes in one Saskatoon neighbourhood

SASKATOON – Residents living on Richardson Road in Saskatoon’s Westview neighbourhood are frustrated with storm sewer upgrades which started last summer.

A pile of rubble where Gunther Kunze’s driveway meets with Richardson Road is considered an improvement.

“Recently I was going out the driveway and I got stuck,” said Kunze.

On Tuesday, the City of Saskatoon filled the sink hole with large grade gravel and concrete after Kunze spent the past several days stranded at home, unable to get in or out of his driveway.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It was a combination of the spring melt and run-off conditions combined with the material we couldn’t get packed very well,” said Chris Hallam, Saskatoon’s construction and design director in charge of this project.

Work to upgrade a storm sewer system began in the fall of 2012.

This past winter, residents dealt with constant noise from generators, the equipment left mud all over the street and now spring brings a new gamut of problems according to Kunze’s neighbour, Morris Zukowski.

“Too much dust. Our windows we can’t open and our gutters are all full of mud,” said Zukowski.

Zukowski has also noticed cracks in his driveway and both he and Kunze have cracks in the walls of their homes, which they attribute to the construction work.

“The machines are too heavy, the houses were shaking most of the time,” said Zukowski.

This construction project has caused separate problems in every season of the year but the end is near.

“Right now we’re just waiting on the asphalt plants to fire up,” said Hallam.
