LAKE LOUISE, Alta. – Prince William and his wife Kate are spending about 24 hours away from the glare of their royal tour, and reports say they are holed up at a backcountry lodge in Banff National Park.
The royal couple reportedly spent the night at Skoki Lodge, a private setting accessible only by an 11-kilometre hike from the Lake Louise ski area.
Media reports say the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived by helicopter.
The young and active couple are known to enjoy hiking, and the lodge’s website bills the surroundings as "breathtaking mountain ridges and alpine lakes" with five different adjoining valleys.
Staff at the lodge, which consists of one main building and three private cabins, say the facility is owned by the Lake Louise ski resort.
There is no electricity or running water, though reports say a cabin has been retrofitted especially for the royal couple, with a full bathroom, and was flown to the lodge in two separate parts.
