Many free events in Edmonton and area on Canada Day

From tanks crushing cars to silly parades and petting zoos, the Edmonton area has events for everyone on Canada Day.

Hit up the Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton Valley Zoo, Fort Edmonton Park or Prairie Gardens in Bon Accord for Canada Day activities. Just remember, admission still applies.

Legislature Grounds: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Start your Canada Day off with a pancake breakfast on the south grounds of the legislature, followed by a 15-km road race and 2.5- km fun run. There will be citizenship ceremonies and a display at Edmonton Antique Car Club. From 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. enjoy some music from local talent, including Black Mastiff, Citie Ballet and Clan MacNaughton Pipe Band. At noon there will be a 21-gun salute and at 2 p.m. a flypast. City Hall: 11:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Bagpipes will open a day of tours, live entertainment, crafts, face painting, stilt walkers and petting zoo. Also, visit the city room for a Canada ceremony at noon.

Edmonton Garrison: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

There will be a host of activities including a military drum line, a tank crushing a car, a zipline, aboriginal acts and Ukranian dances. Some Edmonton Oilers with be there, with the cheer team, signing autographs and playing ball hockey. Also, bring your lawn chairs to the fireworks and concert, which Spirit of the West is headlining. Tantalize your tastebuds with the local fare featuring local chefs and artisans who use ingredients grown in Sturgeon County.

Alberta Aviation Museum: 11410 Kingsway Ave. 10 a.m.

The first Canadian astronaut to walk in space, Chris Hadfield, will speak about pursuing your dreams. The presentation is free but seats are limited.

Old Strathcona Foundation’s Silly Summer Parade and Picnic 12 p.m.

Hit the Old Strathcona area at noon to catch the start of the parade at Queen Alexandra School (7730 106 Street). From there, the parade will head along 78th Avenue to Calgary Trail, across Whyte Avenue and down 108 Street back to the school.

Kinsmen Park Fireworks Display 11 p.m.

Fireworks launched at Kinsmen Park. There is no viewing from the site. The best places to see the show are: legislature grounds, Victoria Park, Ezio Faraone Park, Dantzer’s Hill, and Government House Park.

Mill Woods: 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

For the past four years, more than 50,000 people have been drawn to Mill Woods Park. Children’s activities start a 1 p.m.

There will be music through the day and the night ends with fireworks.

Northlands Park: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Children’s activities, horse racing and live entertainment.

Sherwood Park: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Chow down pancakes at Kinsmen Leisure Centre before you see Olivia Wik, Axiom Mortgages, The Retrofit, Honeymoon Suite and many more music acts. Broadmoor Lake Park has a variety of activities for children including pony rides and laser tag and more. A parade begin at 10 a.m. along Festival Way, to Granada Boulevard and Georgian Way. Fireworks at 11 p.m. in Broadmoor Park.

Riverdale Mural Reveal: Riverdale House, 9231 100 Avenue at 3 p.m.

Artists took months painting murals on fabric.

St. Albert

Have a roaring good time at Lions Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where there will be a flight simulator, road hockey and wagon rides. Try the Father Lacombe Chapel for historic demonstrations, old-fashioned crafts and homemade ice cream. Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Or drop by the multicultural food fare at Riel Park. Then stay for the multicultural show, which starts at 2 p.m. and end your day with fireworks at 11 p.m. at Seven Hills.

Fort Saskatchewan: 10006 100 Avenue from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrate by going back in history at the 1875-1885 North West Mounted Police Fort grand opening. At 2 p.m. Mayor Gale Katchur will mark the occasion with a flag-raising ceremony. Admission will apply.

Also in Fort Saskatchewan 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

There will be pancakes at the Royal Canadian Legion then wander down to the Jubilee Recreation Centre for the parade starting at 11 a.m. For entertainment and activities go to Legacy Park, which promises to have both. Then end the night with country star Gord Bamford and fireworks show.

William F. Lede Park in Leduc 3:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Enjoy a double birthday in Leduc as Canadian country music star Michelle Wright spends her 50th birthday singing to the city. Pure Artists, Lethal Dose and Celtic rock group Derina Harvey Band will kick start the show at 3:30 p.m. Wright is expected to play at 9 p.m. Then Leduc will cap the night off with an outdoor movie at 10:30 p.m. and a fireworks display at 11 p.m.

Stony Plain: Multicultural Heritage Centre 5411-51 Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Catch the parade down Main Street then swing by the Multicultural Heritage Centre for a car festival, petting zoo and other activities. Also, stay for the concert, which will feature a number of acts including the Spruce Grove firefighters pipe band.

Elk Island National Park: Astotin Lake Area from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Cake will be served. Guided hikes focusing on the western toad and native plants will be offered.

West Edmonton Mall Festivities 1 p.m.

Paul Lorieau sung the national anthem at Edmonton Oilers’ games for 30 years and now he is singing at WEM at 1 p.m. this Canada Day. Afterwards, there will be a meet and greet with photo opportunities.
