$500,000 donation to help Inglewood Bird Sanctuary recover from flooding

CALGARY – The City of Calgary has received a helping hand as it works to restore a popular tourist destination hit hard by June flooding.

The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, located on the west side of the Bow River, was badly damaged by rising floodwaters which carved new channels in the park, uprooted trees and destroyed bridges and boardwalks.

The federally designated migratory bird sanctuary attracts thousands of visitors each year, and encompasses a total of 36 hectares of land.

On Wednesday, officials announced a $500,000 donation from TD to help restore flood damage and build a new outdoor classroom.

The classroom will be an open‐walled structure with special conservation features for students and youth groups.

“This generous donation towards the construction of an outdoor classroom will be enjoyed by all visitors and provide essential outdoor learning facilities for children and bird-watching enthusiasts of all ages,” says Parks Director Anne Charlton.

While much of the sanctuary and pathways are still closed due to flood damage, the Nature Centre and Colonel Walker House are open to visitors until the rest of the sanctuary can be restored.
