Controlled burn near Kelowna landfill creates concern

Smoke is rising from near the Kelowna Landfill, but it originates from private property where a permitted burn is underway. Dan Couch/ Global Okanagan

KELOWNA, B.C. – Smoke rising from near the Kelowna landfill on Glenmore Road may be a concern to on-lookers, but it’s part of a controlled burn on nearby property.

A private property owner is conducting a permitted burn, which is allowed today because of good venting in Kelowna.

While workers at the landfill called in the fire to 9-1-1 because of the smoke, fire crews who inspected the blaze found the property owner indeed had a permit.

Several controlled burns have been underway around the Okanagan Valley, including burning on the east side of Osoyoos Lake being conducted by a member of the Okanagan Indian Band, near Highway 97 south of Vernon and in Scenic Canyon and Coldham Regional Parks within the Central Okanagan. Several orchardists are also burning pruning’s.

Burning takes place to remove debris that could become fuel for a fire during the warmer weather months.
