WINNIPEG – The union that represents most City of Winnipeg workers says an unpaid Christmas leave the city plans to impose on workers violates their contract and the union has filed a grievance in protest.

The proposed city budget includes a mandatory 3.5-day unpaid leave between Christmas 2014 and New Year’s Day and employees are not allowed to take the time as paid vacation.

“At a time when the city is spending millions of dollars on cost overruns for the new police headquarters, they are forcing rank-and-file city workers to take unpaid leave to help balance the city’s budget,” CUPE Local 500 president Mike Davidson said in a statement on the union website.

“At the end of the day, it means citizens aren’t getting their needs met and work piles up.”

The city hopes to save $1.5 million by imposing the leave.
