Thousands of young pigs die in barn fire near Burr, Sask.

BURR, Sask. – A fire at one of OlySky’s pig barns near the small community of Burr, Saskatchewan has claimed approximately 3,500 young pigs.

The fire started around 5:30 p.m. on Monday in a nursery barn.

First responders from Humboldt and Lanigan noticed smoke coming from the eaves, however the building became engulfed shortly afterwards and was destroyed.

All the animals housed in the building perished. The barn was housing three to 10 week old pigs.

Casey Smid with OlySky says between $350,000 and $450,000 worth of pigs was lost in the blaze.

“Any loss is devastating and a loss of this magnitude is certainly devastating to the company and having said that we have made alternative arrangements for the staff and for our operations,” said Smid.

“We don’t expect any disruption of operations going forward.”

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Burr is located 17 kilometres south of Humboldt.

OlySky has 41,000 sows in production in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and produces over one million pigs annually.

*Correction: RCMP had previously stated Big Sky Farms was the company that lost 4,500 pigs in the fire.
