VANCOUVER – Passengers were stuck on SkyTrains downtown for over an hour this morning, after a computer failure forced six trains to stop operating.
The Millennium Line and Expo Line SkyTrains are now open at Waterfront, Burrard, Granville and Stadium-Chinatown Stations. TransLink ran extra buses from Broadway-Commercial to Waterfront to help passengers during the delay.
The problem started when six trains "timed out," or lost contact with the central computers. Passengers were told to remain on the trains until they started operating again, but TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said that some people began leaving the trains.
"People need to stay on the trains. We’re trying to get that message out," he said. TransLink needs to account for all passengers to ensure that everyone is safe, he said.
Crews worked to reconnect the trains and get them running again. TransLink estimated only an hour delay at the outset of the problem, but it lasted 90 minutes.
The Canada Line is operating as usual.
