Shawnigan Lake residents rally in Victoria against dump site for contaminated soil

WATCH: Community fights plans for Shawnigan Lake quarry. Kylie Stanton reports.

Hundreds of people from Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island rallied this morning at the B.C. Legislature.

Community groups are fighting plans to turn a rock quarry near Shawnigan Lake into a dump site for contaminated soil.

They fear the soil dump will negatively affect the quality of their drinking water.

Supporters of the plan argue the creation of the dump would generate less pollution than trucking the soil to disposal sites on the Lower Mainland.
