Calgarians sound off about radio contest that burned $5,000

CALGARY- Angry Calgarians continue to sound off about a radio promotion that saw $5,000 end up in the incinerator.

Amp Radio’s Bank It or Burn It promotion sees participants head to Facebook to vote on whether they should keep or burn money. Those who work at the station admit they thought respondents would vote to keep the money—instead, 54 per cent voted to burn it.

“Trying to put into words the horrendous feeling in the pit of my stomach by putting $5,000 into a crematorium is not easy,” says Amp personality Ryan Lindsay. “The fact that we stuck to our word, some people are respecting.”

He adds the point of the contest was promotion—and it’s worked.

“We have to do things that make people talk. Would we be sitting here if we had given $5,000 to a charity?”

However, others see it differently. A pair of restaurateurs are trying to counter the damage that’s already been done, by donating $5,000 to the Mustard Seed.

“I’m in a position to do something. I can’t stop [Amp’s contest] but I can attempt to make it right,” says Jason Balakas. “There’s a way to get press without offending scores of people and being wasteful.”

He and his brother plan to donate another $10,000 if more cash goes up in flames as the contest continues.

“The radio station thinks any publicity is good publicity. In my opinion, this is just stupidity. They’re just throwing money away,” adds Tony Balakas. “Give it to anyone…don’t burn money.”

The radio station expects even more people to vote in Friday’s contest, due to all the attention.
