Hundreds of Calgarians targeted by CRA scam

Calgary police are again warning us: don’t be fooled.

For the past month, scammers have been contacting people claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

In each case, the scammer says the victim owes the CRA money, and demands they wire them cash.

Some victims have also been asked to purchase pre-paid debit cards – and then supply the caller with the PIN access number.

Calgary police say the scammers are targeting the city’s south Asian community in particular, many of them new immigrants.

“They’re scared,” says Cst. Paban Dhaliwal of the Calgary Police Diversity Unit. “A lot of them are new Canadians and they fear deportation, that they will be sent home to their home countries.”

Calgary police say hundreds of people have been contacted by the scammers and dozens of people have handed over money.
