Outclass aims to update Canadian style beyond lumberjacks

Outclass’ menswear collection was inspired by the great Canadian outdoors. Called Out of the Woods, the collection “takes its inspiration from the textures of Ontario’s northlands,” according to the press release. The reds, greens and gold “conjure up the northern autumn landscape.”

Designer Matteo Sgaramella showed plaid shirts, jeans with the hems turned up, leather jackets and cardigans. He even sent a Canadian tuxedo down the runway.

When asked if he was afraid of being too derivative, he brushed it off.

“No, to be honest I find there’s not a lot of clothing that represents Canadian culture and what it means now. And we’re stuck in this realm of lumberjacks and less sophisticated garments,” he said.

To up the sophistication and remove the lumberjack feel, Sgaramella focused on cut and fabric.

“I wanted to use fabrics that seemed vintage and include fabric like herringbone or wool.”

One of the star pieces was a mixed media varsity jacket with a shoutout to the 416 area code on the back.
