City council sets date for upcoming by-election

Lethbridge residents will soon be heading to the polls, with a municipal by-election set for May 12.

Candidates must file nomination papers April 14th, between 10 a.m. and noon at City Hall.

The by-election comes after the death of late city councillor Wade Galloway, who passed away in February in an avalanche at Waterton Lakes National Park.

After giving city officials time to grieve from the loss, putting the by-election into motion has now come to the forefront for city council.

“The Municipal Government Act does clearly state that city council must hold a by-election when there is a vacancy,” explained city clerk Aleta Neufeld. “Unless city council does set an earlier date, it is 90 days after the vacancy occurs.”

The city has six proposed voting stations for the by-election.
