Bowen Island residents rally against BC Ferries’ service cuts

The fight against the impending cutbacks to BC Ferries isn’t over for Bowen Island commuters, who held a rally Saturday to protest service cuts.

More than 50 Bowen Island residents turned out in front of the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal at noon as part of ongoing demonstrations along the coast.

Residents say if cuts go through, the Bowen Island run would be reduced by seven sailings a week.

But BC Ferries says it needs to save $19 million and must cut service on its minor and northern routes.

Fares will also go up four percent on April 1.

The decision has angered coastal communities who say the proposed cuts will impact their quality of life and tourism.

Last month, Sunshine Coast residents came to Vancouver to drop off petitions at the premier’s office.

On Tuesday, several hundred people turned out in front of the B.C. legislature opposing the pending cuts.

It didn’t convince the transportation minister who says the ferry system has to be sustainable and cuts will most likely be implemented in a few weeks.
