The Calgary Fire Department is sending 100 firefighters and eight fire trucks to help battle the blaze consuming Slave Lake.
Spokesman Brian McAsey said on Monday morning that the department is planning on sending 50 firefighters immediately and the other half tomorrow.
In addition, the city of Calgary is also sending the Canada Task Force 2, a heavy urban search and rescue team, to Westlock, AB. They were dispatched at 3 a.m.
“The town’s been ravaged by fire. They need a huge amount of resources and help. The fact of the matter is you expect your neighbours to help and that’s what we’re here to do,” said McAsey.
The Canada Task Force 2 will be responsible for power generation, tenting, heating, communications and has 16 trained individuals. They will also set up a mobile rescue command unit and put up temporary structures for patient triage and treatment facilities.
