Fishermen safe after boat sinks off Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, N.S. – Two men are safe after their lobster boat caught fire and sank off Yarmouth, N.S., on the weekend.

Trent Shaw and his son Travis were able to get off their boat Double Identity and into a life-raft.

Mike Bonin of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax says one of the men made a cell phone call from the life-raft and a helicopter and two coast guard ships were dispatched.

He says the fire broke out at about 6 a.m. Sunday but the men drifted for about four hours until they were within cell phone range.

The men from Pinkney’s Point were picked up by a nearby fishing boat and then transferred to one of the coast guard ships.
