Boat launch plans criticized

A plan to expand one of the region’s busiest boat launches is receiving some criticism.

The boat launch at Paddlewheel Park in Vernon is often crowded and chaotic.

The launch caters to yachts, motorboats, jet skis and kayaks.

Rather than building a new boat launch to alleviate the pressure, the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee is recommending the existing launch be expanded.

However officials admit the report leaves a lot to be desired, saying the consultant may not have completely understood the launch’s logistics and organization.

The report also comes as a surprise to the Okanagan Landing Community Association who believes public input was not used in the report.

Officials say they will go back to the public and possibly another consultant to brainstorm alternative solutions.

Another idea that has been floated if the launch were expanded is to have a launch manager on site to help direct traffic.
