A Nanaimo police officer is recovering from an attack outside of the local casino last night, after a citizen called 9-1-1 in the nick of time, said RCMP.
The female officer, a 13-year-veteran, responded alone to an assault complaint around 7 p.m. Thursday at 620 Terminal Avenue North, Casino Nanaimo.
Outside, she met the victim who suddenly attacked her. The 29-year-old Nanaimo man punched the officer repeatedly in the head and tried to grab her gun from its holster.
A citizen who saw the incident asked the officer is she needed help. She told him to call 9-1-1 for back-up. Officers arrived and the alleged attacker was placed in custody. He faces charges of assaulting a police officer and attempting to assault a police officer.
The Good Samaritan and other witnesses stayed on-scene to provide statements to police.
The officer who was attacked was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and released with minor injuries to her hand and face.
What occured in the original assault complaint is not yet known.
