<p>CORNER BROOK, N.L. – The government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $4.3 million dollars to help 450 workers at the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill upgrade their skills.</p> <p>It’s hoped the money, which will be spent over three years, will help improve the mill’s competitiveness in the global market.</p> <p>A severe decline in newsprint consumption globally has forced the mill’s owners to make cuts to operations in recent years.</p> <p>Labour Minister Darren King says the sustainability of the mill depends on making its two remaining newsprint machines more cost effective and efficient.</p> <p>Employee training will cover technological knowledge, mechanical skills, information technology and management.</p> <p>Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, a major employer on the province’s west coast, is the only remaining newsprint maker in Newfoundland and Labrador following the closure of two AbitibiBowater mills.</p>
