B.C. to spend $5 million on HST advertising campaign

The B.C. government will spend about $5 million on an advertising campaign leading up to the HST referendum, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon announced Thursday.

The HST referendum will be conducted by a mail-in ballot process that runs from June 13 to July 22.

The referendum question was set by the chief electoral officer last year: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? Yes/No.”

The Liberal government has promised to follow the wishes of a simple majority in the referendum and scrap the HST if asked to do so.
