Judge orders second retrial of Alberta man convicted in fatal stabbing

EDMONTON – An Alberta man convicted of second-degree murder is to get a second-retrial on the charge.

In 2008, Paul White was convicted of fatally stabbing Grant Shoemaker of Red Deer more than 30 times.

Last year, the Alberta Court of Appeal ruled that White should never have been forced to conduct his own defence in the case and ordered a new trial.

But the judge in that new trial in Edmonton has declared a mistrial four weeks into the proceedings.

The defence asked for the mistrial over comments made by the Crown during its summation in the case, which stems back to 2005.

White, 24, is to return to court on May 13 when a date for a second retrial will be set.
