Ontario NDP says daycare safety reports can be more complete without jeopardizing privacy

New Democrats say the government shouldn’t hide behind privacy concerns and really allow parents to get a full picture of how safe child care centres are.

Ontario expanded its child care website on the weekend so that it now includes up to three years of inspections for licensed centres and home-based daycares.

But it has yet to deliver on a promise to include "serious" incidents such as abuse, mistreatment, injuries and deaths at daycare centres, citing privacy and legal concerns.

NDP critic Michael Prue says there is no real reason to exclude those incidents since it’s important for parents to know whether their children are safe.

He adds the province could write legislation in such a way that gets around any legal concerns and protects people’s privacy.

Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky says the website is the most comprehensive available anywhere in the country, and that no jurisdiction is providing serious incidents reports because of legal issues.
