Snowmobiler injured in avalanche in B.C.’s Monashee Mountain Range

One man has been injured in an avalanche near Cherryville, B.C. Google Maps

A 34 year old North Okanagan, B.C. man has been critically injured in an avalanche in the Monashee Mountain Range near Cherryville, B.C., according to Vernon Search and Rescue.

Crews were called to the scene shortly before 3 p.m., according to Vernon Search and Rescue spokesperson Leigh Pearson.

Pearson said one man, who was snowmobiling, was located after being caught in the slide.

BC Ambulance confirmed the man has been taken to a Kelowna hospital in critical condition.

The man’s identity has not been released.

The area is a popular destination for backcountry activities, including snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding, but it is not known what the man was doing at the time of the avalanche.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a special warning for the Monashees on Saturday.

“A warm, wet and windy storm is expected to result in natural avalanche activity by [Sunday] morning,” the CAC said on their website. 

The risk of an avalanche was high in the area, with “very dangerous conditions” in the alpine and treeline terrain, according to the CAC. Below treeline, risks were considerable.

The warning remains in effect until Sunday at 10 p.m.
