SYDNEY, N.S. – A Cape Breton high school has banned student dances after a drug- and alcohol-fuelled event last week resulted in suspensions for between 25 and 30 teens.
Principal Kevin Deveaux of Sydney Academy said Monday that many students were found to be under the influence and some tried to bring alcohol inside.
He said there was some fighting and a student from another school was injured.
Police were called but spokeswoman Desiree Vassallo said no charges were laid but the investigation was continuing.
Deveaux said there are no plans at this point to continue holding dances because it’s just not safe.
He said school staff are always worried about drug use among students but he wouldn’t speculate on the types of drugs they might be using.
